Switching to Synthetic question

Hey, I have a 00 civic dx vp with 66,000 miles and was wondering about switching to synthetic oil. Can I switch over from regular oil? I've heard people say its not good but others say you can and it wont hurt? Im a little confused. What would you do, stay with regular or switch? thanks.

Switch.

There are many, many threads on this. Do a search for "synthetic" or "oil" or anything and read up a bit.

There is vurtually no downside to switching except the price.

I also say "switch" and you'll be glad you did. Synthetic beats regular oil especially in the winter because it doesn't get thick like molassis, which means your engine gets lubricated faster on start-ups.

RE: Switching to Synthetic question

Are there any special things I need to do in order to switch? I read somewhere that someone said you should run a flush type oil in it for like 20 min then drain it and replace with the synthetic. Is this true, or should I just drain the oil in it now and replace it with synthetic? Thanks for you help.

If I were you, I would go half and half.

Half and half, would that even work? I mean the like the oils wouldn't mix due to one being of natural petroleum, and the other being made in a lab. But hey, I may be wrong.

Flushing isn't a bad idea. You could go with a blend if you are worried about it.

I would either flush it (to get rid of any contaminated oil) or use full synthetic (then change it after 2000 miles).

Do you need to switch to full synthetic after going turbo?

RE: Switching to Synthetic question

You don't need to switch, but it's better if you do switch to synthetic.

Question: I switched to synthetic and it's been about 3,000 miles. Should I go ahead and change it since it's the first round of synthetic? How do I change the filter without changing the oil (aka spilling it everywhere) inbetween 7,000 mile changes?

Oh yeah one other thing... that new "advanced" stuff they're putting out with advertised 15,000 miles between changes... is that stuff for real? How can that possibly be safe for your engine?

IMO, you're best off to go with Amsoil or Mobil1.

RE: Switching to Synthetic question

I live in Michigan, what kind of full synthetic should i use in the winter and what kind in the summer? Also you should always use a full synthetic oil for a turboed engine, i used to own a TT 300zx and i only used full synthetic Mobil 1 for it. If you starve that turbo with no oil you are looking at rebuilding it and if any of you know where the turbos are at in a 90's 300zx it is a pain to have to remove.

RE: Switching to Synthetic question

what about the weight?? Do turbo motors need a higher weighted oil?

RE: Switching to Synthetic question

It depends on the temperature of the area you live in. I can't really remember with one i used in the winter and the summer but i used 10w30 and 10w40, i believe the heavier weight was for the winter but i never drove my 300zx in the winter.
