Time for a timing belt change?

Hi -

I have a 1998 Honda Civic (10 yrs old). I am the 2nd owner and it has about 84,500 miles on it now. The timing belt on this has not been changed so far. The manual says 7 years or 105K miles. Some mechanics say that I can just wait till 105K miles, but of course the Honda dealer says change it now. So wanted to know the opinion of people here, is it time to change the timing belts or can I wait for the 90K servicing?

Thanks,
HCEX

To be safe, you should probably change the almost 11 year-old timing belt now. If the belt snaps or slips, the engine will likely be destroyed.

Definitely change that sucker
best investment you will ever make in a honda engine
i recommend a new water pump and at the very least a new timing belt tensioner, while doing the timing belt change

get that sucker changed!!! ditto what trust said, you might as well get the water pump changed while there in there.

i got my timing belt and water pump changed at about 100,000 miles. if you want to you should change it now, eventually you would need to change it and if the belt snaps, its going to cause a lot more problem than a new timing belt

i would just change it before it lets go. its more of piece of mind knowing that there is a new belt on there

You can't know for sure unless you have records of when it was done last. In that case, change it just in case, and that way you know when it needs to be replaced again.
