Timing Advance?
 

Ok... doing MINI ME swap and wondering about what advancing timing actually does.. and if someone has listing of parts i would need to upgrade to get a good response from doing this.. i figure since ill have the head taken apart i might as well change cam gear while im at it.. Thanks

You advance the timing by turning the distributor. This will give you more power, but you will have to run premium fuel and it will also increase the chances of detonation. If you don't run a higher octane of fuel, you will have detonation.

hp, and i also think he meant pre-detonation (pinging). and you mentioned cam gears and timming, so i think your referring to your cam/crank syncronizing, which is the timming of your valves to open and close at the proper time, allowing air to enter and exit your cylinders. did you mean to sy you want to change the camshaft? because that is where you would acheive the most gains. you can get different camlobe profiles, from moderate to radical lift and duration. and then you may want to add an adjustable camgear to fine tune the valve timing. merely advancing your timing realy will not do squat

advanced spark timing + unleaded 87 = kaboom.

basically premium feul is a must.

By advancing timing on distributor, you're actaully gaining a little torque, and if anything losing a very small HP amount, like 2 hp. Not noticible really. Retarding does the opposite.

is it more noticeable though if u have stage 3 cam with polished/ported head and increased duration on lifters.. that and getting new pistons once bottom end of block is cleaned up..also will advancing timing cause car to run lean or rich like with fuel changes?

You'll notice it. Get your self a skunk manifold, and a bigger TB. No, it wont cause you to run lean/rich, but you'll have to use premium.

do u have to change your timing at all once you get ur turbo also? noticed in other post that u are getting urs installed

I may have to retard a little, or run colder plugs. I'll see once things get rolling.
