is there a d.i.y on how to change a timing belt.

For a 96-00 Civic, I was helped by information described in this link (except I didn't remove the front bumper):

You also need the service manual:

http://hondatech.info/downloads/Auto/Manuals/Civic/

Follow directions in service manual precisely to avoid installing the timing belt incorrectly, which could be a disaster for your engine.
