Timing belt change issues

I am in the middle of changing the timing belt on my 1997 civic ex (non-vtec). The belt has never been changed and the timing was around 8* retarded when I started the change.

I have the camshaft at TDC (word "UP" is vertical). The crank sprocket timing mark is lined up with the arrow on the oil pump. But when I replace the crank pulley, the timing marks are still off just like before the change. If I adjust the crank pulley, the crank sprocket timing marks are no longer lined up. so, I am confused as to what to do. i can rotate the engine just fine. There is no interfearance.

Any suggestions???

you should be able to turn the crank pulley and make it line up.

But if I line of the middle of the three marks, the crank sprocket mark which lines up to the oil pump arrow is off. So which is right?

I think I realize what my problem is. I am trying to line up my ignition marks (the 3 lines) and not the timing mark (the single line). That would make more sense on what I am seeing.

Are you reading top dead center at the beginning of the intake stroke or the end of the compression stroke?

yeah, the're about 3 or 4 lines on the crank pulley, make sure you line up the right one. Good luck man.

Also, remember that you have to put your timing belt cover back since it also has some marks that need to line up. Here a link to a diy that I used when I did mine.
