Hey guys, so my civic has about 59k on it, and its a 2000. I called the dealer the other day to inquire about the 60k service and he said that I should get the timing belt changed before winter because its been 7 years now even though the mileage is way below the 105k mark. I was wondering what you guys thought about this because I definately can not afford to do the 60k service and the timing belt, even if I the 60k service by myself. I was just going to wait until I got to 105k because thats what the manual said but I have been thinking about it since he told me that and I am not sure what is the best route to take because I know what happens if the timing belt breaks.... A timing belt/water pump replacement is great insurance for keeping your motor running strong. 59k is really low, however like the tech said, it has been 7 years. Maybe start saving your money now, and get it done as soon as you can

 

i got my timing belt, tensioner, and water pump done last week and i have 85k miles. mine is a 97 tho. all my friends hvae had their belt squeek or trouble with the water pump at around 90k even tho the book says 100k or so.

 

you could try visually inspecting your timing belt if you can get close enough to see the ribs on the inside of the belt.

if the ribs (bumps on the belt) appear to show wear or cracking near the base where it is attached to the belt, then it's definitely time to change the belt.

it's a subtle wear so look closely.

i remember when i had my 93 EG hatch. the dealership always recommended i change the belts at 60,000 miles no matter what, but that's because they wanted to make money off of me.

if you have the money, then i woul do it, because nothing sucks worse than a broken timing belt on an interference engine.

 

Piston hitting open valve FTMFL [:@] I'd definitely get it done if you can, just take a look at it to make sure u don't absolutely need a new belt.
