There is a key (rectangular metal block) that fits into a slot created between the crankshaft and crank pulley when they are properly aligned. Did you insert the key?

The mechanical timing is fine if you got it right when you installed the timing belt on the crank gear. You may be able to buy a new key from an auto parts store.
