Well, you could turbo the current motor for some fun, but be ready if something starts to fail such as piston rings, bearings etc etc. For a turbo, you should have somewhere around $2000 ready to spend (at least). You can buy one of those eBay kits, but the turbos themselves are crap, and the oil lines can melt (not good at all). I would go ahead and piece a kit together if you want boost. Also, remember if you are boosting, you'll need a tune ($$$), and some sort of ECU or piggyback system in order to have it tuned ($$).
If you went ahead and dropped a b16 in, I can say it will be more reliable than the boosted d series, but definitely not as fast. You'll probably end up spending $3000- $3500 for the swap total. You would not have to worry about tuning as you could find a ECU from an OBD1 b16 and be able to use that I think. You would also be able to use the CAI you currently have on the new motor, too.
