Turned 100,000

My 2000 LX just turned over 100,000 miles and I've been reading around the forum that a new water pump and timing belt change is in order. I just had a mechanic quote what that would cost today and it was about $400. This isn't too bad, but he said a little over two hundred of that is in labor. I was just wondering, if I got a haynes manual and the parts, how hard would it be to do myself. I'm in high school and work a lot, so I have the money, but would rather not have to spend it. I'm mechanical and have worked on things before, so I don't think it would be too hard of a project to tackle. I would just like a little input on the difficulty. Thanks.

DOOD. get yer butt to teh honda dealership and change that belt out or do it yourself!11

if that belt snaps on you, you'll be sitting inside a sooper expensive paper weight because honda engines are interference engines. ≈

that means that if your timing belt breaky, your valves come crashin' down into your piston headies...

honda recommends changing the belt every 60,000 miles.

besides, $400 for timing belt change is dirt cheap from a dealership.

honda recommends changing the belt every 60,000 miles.

That's only recommend if you regularly drive in temperatures over 110, or below -20 (F), otherwise they recommend 105000 miles. I wouldn't push that envelope though.

You can get the OEM belt itself online for about $30, and pump for about $70, by the way.

Yeah, I've read my maintenance log, and it says 105,000 and I've also read 100,000 on the forum and I already know what happens when that belt goes, so yes, I'm definately going to change it out very very soon. Thanks for all the help. I don't think I'm going to pay $400 to have it done though, I've been meaning to get a manual anyway, and besides, I can take a little more pride in saying I did it myself and did a good job, than, I worked how long to pay some guy to do the exact same thing.
