Turning off engine light

Well, my 98's check engine light came on the other day for scheduled maintance. I did the maintenace myself, but how do I turn off the light? I'm tempted to just remove the light... "The only time a check engine light comes on is when the check engine light is broke". I know it has it's benefits, but anything the check engine light will catch, chances are I'll catch it myself.

RE: Turning off engine light

Remove the BACKUP fuse (7.5A) from the under-hood fuse/relay box (see picture). Wait 10 seconds and then reinsert. This will clear the code from the ECU. If the original cause for the CEL code still exists, then the CEL will again turn ON when the fault is detected.

To retrieve a CEL code from the ECU, follow instructions detailed at this link:

The check engine light most liekly came up for other reasons...the maintainance indicator is a whole different thing.

Hm... I see what you're saying. I'm too lazy to pull the codes, so I'll reset it and if it goes again I'll check it.

Lol, well if it was something serious I would have noticed by now or seen it when I changed the oil/engine filters/etc last night.

The fault may not cause a driveability problem but might cause you to fail a state emissions test, if one exists where you live.

I dunno...I've been driving a car with a visible crack in the head for about two weeks now....all seems fine except coolant loss and irratic idle :D

RE: Turning off engine light

I'm pretty sure we don't have emissions tests in WI. If we did, everyone would fail (hicks are every where up here). A cracked head though? Hey, if it's not necessary to fix now, why do it :P I checked over my engine and underbody pretty thoroughly (there was a rattling at idle that was bugging the hell out of me so I went on the hunt to find it - turned out just to be a loose strapping around the exhaust XD) and didn't see anything. No leaking fluids, no abnormalties, nuffin'. So I guess I'll just restart the light and see if it turns back on.
