Upgraded valvetrain
 

Driving a 97 ex d16y8 with i/h/e. Got a few questions for upcoming mods. I'm purchasing intake manifold and throttle body. Whats a good size bore throttle body for a N/A motor so that it's not such a large bore to decrease the velocity of the air and has decent response and power. Also i'm lookin for a stage 2 cam. Crower's sound nice and they require a spring and retainer set. Wonderin if i should throw a valve set in there while i'm gettin my hands greasy anyways. What are the pros/cons of this valvetrain setup. Lastly with a mild head port n polish and the aforementioned setup, whats a ballpark horespower rating i'll get with a decent tune? And don't bother tellin me to screw all that work and piece together a turbo. I know thats what a smart person would do for more power. I'm just doin this to have some fun and learn lots.

Doing a cam shouldn't require the removal of the head unless these cars are a lot different than I'm used to, so you would be in a lot more on labor if you were to also do valves.

A mild head port, milling, and valve job would do you well.

60 or 62mm seems to be the standard for replacements.

I wouldn't buy a new intake manifold, just have yours ported, the y8 manifold is great as is.

And yes, the crower stage two seems to be widely accepted as the best choise for a street driven car.

Looks like you're on the right track.

I never said i'd have to take off the head to switch out the cam. Maybe i worded it wrong

I thought you said you were thinking of changing the valves.... if you were to do that you would need to remove the head.

whatever the case, thanks for the feedback. You threw me off when you said porting the y8 head would be just as good as a performance intake manifold. That's great if it is cause i'm getting my head ported and the ports matched anyways, so less money spent. But how come the y8 is about as good as performance? Are the runners already as close to equal length as it gets? Anybody else have thoughts on this or more commentary?

No no, I said a ported Y8 intake manifold is just as good as aftermarket... not the head. You should have the intake manifold port matched to the new head porting.
