yeah, It's really really hard to hear it on a SOHC engine. If you pay close attention to the tach, you'll see it jump when VTEC engages. Here are some stats I found about when VTEC engages:
D16Z6 and Y8 = 4800 rpm
B18C1 (GSR) = 4400 rpm
B16A from JDM = 4800 rpm
B16A2 and A3 from USDM = 5500 rpm

an intake will help you hear it a little better... it's really subtle with a sohc; I've only heard it hit... well, let's just say the number of times I've heard it is still a single-digit number.
