Didnt' any notice he said he has a 1.7.... you wont' "feel" it kick in, won't feel it kick anything... If I'm not mistaken it's 5600 for the 1.7.

yeah, It's really really hard to hear it on a SOHC engine. If you pay close attention to the tach, you'll see it jump when VTEC engages. Here are some stats I found about when VTEC engages:
D16Z6 and Y8 = 4800 rpm
B18C1 (GSR) = 4400 rpm
B16A from JDM = 4800 rpm
B16A2 and A3 from USDM = 5500 rpm
My D15B7 does that in that rpm range anyway... Does that mean i have VTAKK!! lol j/k

an intake will help you hear it a little better... it's really subtle with a sohc; I've only heard it hit... well, let's just say the number of times I've heard it is still a single-digit number.

keep in mind, it doesn't "kick in" it engages. It is supposed to be a smooth transition.

there's something wrong if its hitting at 5400... I've listened really close to my carlately... vtec is pronounced on a z6 if you listen really closely... try driving on a steep-ish hill where your rpm's climb fairly slow. You'll hear it start doing the whole vtec growl thing around 4500rpm, and then you can hear vtec fully engage around 4800, give or take. I'll get a video clipof it when I get a new camera... I tried to get a clip of it on my razr, but you really can't hear the engine too well... stupid phone lol

Get a VTEC controler and just set the points of engagement. Mine kicks at 4400 and I have a SOHC 1.5 D15B
