where does the Hp go?

howdi guys another amature as post from mikeee

Alright, supposedly my stock 1600cc makes about 103Hp, a mate told me that quite a bit of horsepower is taken up by the belt driven water pump and that installing a battery operated pump could spare me a few more horses! what do you felers reckon about this?

RE: where does the Hp go?

Well, is it 103 bhp? (brake horsepower). There are two different ways oh "measuring" it. BHP is the hp before the belt driven water pump and such. HP is after all of the loss due to those things. So, obviously, the BHP will be higher than the HP.

makes sense, running the water pump just makes hte engine work harder, but i have no clue how to go about doing it and not so sure about its reliability....never really heard of it before.

RE: where does the Hp go?

^ it won't be as effective (maybe) because you would add even more weight to your car because you will have to add a very strong electric motor and that would really drain your alternator, prolly. plus all of that time and energy could be put into something useful. (like not that)

and the flow of water is determined by the speed the motor revs

My buddy has a Chevy pickup, and he's taking off his fans to replace them with electric ones to take some of the strain off. He's doing it for the sake of clearance to add a custom intake and TB spacer, but he claims that it'll give him 10 more hp or so.
