Default auto to manual? how does it effect mileage

MY civic has a d16z6 motor but the stock LX auto tranny. I may have found a cheap(ish) manual out of an EX and was wondering what it would to do to my gas millage. I do about 90% highway driving @ an avg of 70mpg and im currently getting about 29mpg (im sure i could get better if i kept my foot out of it)

few things, Mines a 93, has the EX/SI motor... and the ex/si tranny has shorter gears than a LX tranny

Not being mean or anything, but you cant really compare the EGs to anything 01 or newer, i dont belive

I am also thinking about switching out my auto for a manual primarily for fuel efficiency purposes. Also, I hear that the auto tranny doesn't last as long. If you swap yours out, could you post the fuel efficiency gains so I can determine if its worth the trouble.

if you want gas mileage, dont go with an ex or si tranny, they are the sport transmissions... im thinkign its the VX that had the real tall gears, if you only want gas mileage, thats the way to go.... I was just making sure my mileage wasnt goign to drop through the floor... as long as i can keep mine are 30, im cool.

Thanks. Good to know. I'm not too familiar with VX's, but I think HX's are well know for fuel efficiency. But I think both of those are very rare. I will probably try to get a DX or an LX then. I have a '97 DX, by the way.

A manual will DEFINITELY improve your gas mileage. A study by Peterbuilt semis showed that 7-9% of fuel efficiency was lost in the transfer case alone. Plus, if you shift right, you can be wayyy more efficient than an auto. I get about 37 with my 05 ex, and that is going up and down hills and around curves

Do you believe the 2012 claims that the auto gets 39 hwy and the man gets 36? Are they including the EX in that claim?
