need help with simple swaps for mpg 89 hatch

i have a auto 1989 civic hatch dx:::::::

it has a blown headgasket. think only 100k on car''

1. is there a cheap engine or head swap that i should do for better MPG. i could care less about power.

2. what manual trans should i try for? can i swap out the gear sets for taller gears like in the rare hf?

I LIVE IN CA SO I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO GO TO BAR, AND IT NEEDS TO PASS ALL SMOG. ((((NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS)))

THANKS FOR ANY HELP

For better mpg you want to get rid of the DPFI system and the automatic transmission. Putting in the engine package used in a VX (1992-1995) or HX (1996-2000) would be optimal as those are really tuned for mpg. You will need to modify the clutch pedal arrangement and engine mounts to put these later model parts in. It will be California legal since the engine is newer than the car.

changing the engine will require being refed; and doesnt seem cost effective. and other ideas or details

Um. You specifically asked for engine swap ideas, then shoot down the first opinion offered?

K, I'll bite. Move elsewhere, where they don't have such stupid smog laws?
