--$2400 too much for service contract? (The Mechanic)
 

Hi

I just bought a new to me 2010 EX 44,200 miles. I love her already! :p It is not certified pre-owned, so I was told I could not get HondaCare.

I was not going to get a service contract. But, I was offered a $500 discount. The plan is "The Mechanic" underwritten by "The Warranty Group". It is the Platinum plan at $2400 for 5 years/60,000 miles.

I know parts are not included and of course the usual keep up maintenance, etc..

The only reason I would like some kind of contract is because I have a very sporatic and sparse income, so if something did go wrong, it would wipe out any funds I do have and possibly not even be able to pay - hope not.

I have had Ford's most of my life and they lived up to their nickname "Fix Or Repair Daily", so you can imagine where I am coming from.

My research seems to be that I paid too much. It is all new to me, I never took a service contract out before and would love advice. I am going to call around to some A+ BBB outfits and other Honda Dealerships, there aren't too many (I'm near Buffalo, NY). I can opt out of the one I currently have at any time.

thats the biggest scam ever its a honda it reliable thats why you bought it rite don't waste your money. do your regular maintenance and you will ge good as gold.

Thanks so much ! that seems to be the consensus. The car was serviced and maintained regularly according to carfax.

My brother has had a civic hybrid for 11 years and said he had only paid $700 for one repair that was actually something he did.

So it's $2400 but it doesn't include parts? If that's the case do not buy that!!!

The 2010 Civic is very reliable. By 2010 all of the little issues have been worked out.

I think I read the contract wrong and parts are included if it not something I caused... thanks for the reply BurningRubber - I am leaning toward cancelling it before the 60 days are up.

Either way I would cancel it. $2400 is a lot of money. I also have a 2010 and am not worried about anything big going wrong. Before the 2010 I drove a 1998 Civic for 7 years and the only things to go wrong was a window regulator, muffler and the B-pipe in the exhaust. All totaled, about $200 in repairs to drive the car for 7 years and about 70,000 miles.

If you really think about it that warranty plan will expire before the car starts to have things go wrong with it.

Just keep up with maintenance and treat the car with respect and it will last you a long time with minimal repairs.

Thanks @BurningRubber - I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, perspective and advice! I am going to cancel that contract asap. It ends of being $2900 at the end of it all because of loan fees Eeek.
