Default alternator output question... if its suposed to charge all the time or ON and OFF...

1999 civic coupe EX
well i just squized my old big optima yellow top battery under the hood and also instaled a LED voltage display inside my civic wired in thru my radio cause it was the easiest wires to get to....

well i was shocked to see that the voltage droped down to standard 12.6 WHEN DRIVING... then after so long it comes back on up to 14.2volts.....

my question is do these civics actualy cut off the alternator from time to time or do ya think mines about to burn out????? this realy has me paranoid......
my civics got ruffly 90K miles now..... and i know i need to replace the timing belt and such preaty soon. was just wanting to buy a few more goodies before....

ahh i think that is about right for the voltage, a friend of mine has a Protege5 and it is the same voltage on his car, so i think it would be arround the same for a Civic

ya but somtimes only 12.6 and sometimes 14.2

the 14.2 wouldnt bother me if it was that high ALL THE TIME!
its realy freaken me out when it does that.... and im not stupid i know some people are thinking.. at idle it drops of course..... BUT it does that when im going down the road at 45MPH.... i begin to worry! but this is my first honda ive realy looked at its voltage... in my old 86crx i didnt realy care about that TURD! LOL

im used to BIG fullsize chevy trucks and big vehicles! and i know those are power hogs!

another odd thing ive noticed after i unwire the battery i always seem to have a REALY low idle after i rewire in the battery for a few drives... no clue why it does that..... found that to be kinda odd... its done it everytime ive had the battery outta the car for at least a half hour....

When you disconnect your battery your ecu resets. All of its fuel curves and idle conditions go to default values. That is why it idles strange after you disconnect the battery untill it relearns the idle conditions and fuel curves. As for the voltage I really dont know but i wouldnt worry about it unless you notice any other problems that point to your alternator going bad.
