Can I drive in S when driving in town?
I have a '97 Civic HX Auto which has a CVT trany which you probably already know......anyway, I was wondering if it was o.k. to drive in S when driving in town. I get alot better pickup in S then I do in D I think it's because the gear ratio is shorter in S then it is in D. I don't hardly ever use L though......
Basically what I'm saying is....will it eventually hurt the car in some way if I drive it in S when driving in town or just everyday driving? |
RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
its fine

RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
Will it affect gas mileage driving in S versus driving in D?
|
RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
why dont you drive around in D, then when you need pickup put it in S
|
RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
Yes, it will reduce your MPG. I've got a 98 Civic HX CVT as well.

RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
i thought s just means that you only use your first three gears?
if this is true, then of course you will have better pickup because shorter gears have more power. but just like they said, if you stay in shorter gears, you will be wasting more gas. and the acceleration should pretty much be the same because i thought that automatics usually only jump into fourth gear when it seems like you are cruising and maintaining a speed. |
RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
o.k. I'll just keep it in D then....I want to get the most MPG's as I can.

Theblackpearl, just so you know, an automatic CVT stands for Continuously Variable Transmission... there are no standard gears. here is a link if you dont know how they work http://auto.howstuffworks.com/cvt.htm basically, there is no fourth gear... or first, second, third, or fith... They are really different and have the potental to maximize MPG because they can keep the engine in its most efficient RPM.

d**n, i guess automatics have gotten a lot more advanced. i guess i wouldn't even know because i never bother to learn about automatics. i don't have time to read the link now, but i will soon. thankz basil

RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
Yeah no worries, most dont even know that a CVT even existed... let alone know how they work... lol
|
RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
wow, cvts are pretty simple. i think that i understood that better than when i read about the torque converter a couple weeks ago.
do you know if they have incorporated this technology into the performance and tuning industry, because the site states that it can accelerate like 25 percent better than both it's manual and automatic counterparts? |
RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
Yeah, they can accerlerate better becuase you dont have to shift gears... but there is a lot of downsides, the main one is that it is only working off of friction on a very small surface, so it cannot hold a lot of power. It can hold for everyday stuff, but it cant take the beating a tuner would give it...

RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
i guess we just have to hand it over to the engineers and wait patiently for them to perfect it, it's alright, i'm patient
|
RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
Yeah I guess... but I still like the feel of a standard tranny, shifting and all. But I'm young and able-bodied, so maybe when I'm old I will want an auto, but I hope not.

RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
probably not, having a manual and controlling the stick is something you fall in love with, i get really pissed whenever i have to drive an auto, so i'll probably stick with a manual all my life
|
RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
I was watching this auto show on speed channel and they were talking about automatics vs manuals and autos beat manuals when you do a little tweaking to them with a rebuild kit.

RE: Can I drive in S when driving in town?
well that depends a lot on the type of auto... lol seriously, and it also depends on what you do with it. A lot of times, if the engine has a crap load of torque, then an auto will do great in a drag, especially since you can spool the engine and hold the brake on the line. Also, if they are strong enough, they can shift faster and smoother than a manual, but then you are getting into a lot of money for one.
More often than not, an automatc in an autoX isnt the best because you need to keep your RPM up as high as you can, and still apply a little or a lot of power (modulating the clutch) and an auto generally wont let you keep the RPM high without applying the engine's full power. But, like you said, if they rebuilt and tweaked then, I'm sure they could do well. Anyway, thats my .02 |
