Default Correct way to drive a manual transmission vehicle?

This has been brought up by some people on other forums and i just wanted to get others opinions on this topic.

when coasting to stops, some say is harms your tranny if you shift into neutral and coast to the stop, while others say to leave it in gear until right beofre you stop and then shift into neutral?

examaple: your driving 45mph down a road and the light in front of you turns red......to you put it in neutral and coast from 45 to stopping or do you break while leaving it in 5th gear until you need to shift out of 5th to keep vehicle from stalling?

opinions.....????

I just pop it out of gear and coast. It's basically like idling to a stop. I don't know why people insist on downshifting. Who needs the extra wear? and leaving it in a highway gear while braking seriously lugs the engine.

Doesnt downshifting slow your car down tho so you put less stress on the breaks?

it will put less wear on your brakes but thing about it.... BRAKE pads are easy to replace... now think about replacing your tranny!

when i had a stick i always poped it into neutral and costed all the way! just be smart when braking and have enough speed to get where you want to stop at. LMFAO

Exactly, Addict. Brake pads are a wear item. They are made to wear. Tranny's are not.

+1111111, and popping ur car into neutral and coasting does noth arm ur tranny, but wears ur brakes a little more thyan usual, no big deal

Remember this: NEW Brakes are cheaper than a NEW tranny. That should give you the answer.
