Default E-brake issues

I bought an e-brake cover to replace the factory one on my 97 civic. I was wondering how to remove the original one? (covers the first 5 inches of the ebrake handle)

Saw it off. Not the entire thing, just the rubber part.

Thanks, as well I was thinking of changing the shifter ****, I imagine it is the same thing? I took off the original cover but there is metal and plastic underneath. Any ideas?
