RE: Gadgets...
I don't really leave anything valuable in my car. It's a habit I learned from owning a topless/doorless Jeep in Chicago. People here will even steal your lighter, jumper cables, and a fire extinguisher...among other goofy things.
The factory stereo works fine for me. The only thing I leave really is an inverter and multiple 12V jacks that I've wired in, with a heavy-duty battery to power it all. Then I can plug in whatever I want to take with me on the road. I should stillupgrade the alternator, but it hasn't been a problem yet. I don't blend margaritas or run powertools or anything. I run a GPS, laptop, MP3 player, cellphones, etc. If I want to watch DVDs the laptop suffices. The car's pretty set for roadtrips with toys.
Under the hood, I have a 12V plug attached to the battery via a circuit breaker, to power Motorola and Kenwood 2-way radios. I used to program and tune radios, so it was beneficial to have a mobile power source and the ability to power a laptop all day when say...programming radios on 300 schoolbuses.
