I never understood the whole droping trucks thing. You buy a truck to haul things or go off roading with, a lowrider gas guzzler doesn't make any sense at all.
A civic will be reliable and fun, and good platform for cheap mods. If thats not enough for you to sway towards honda than nothing will.

If you're a true 'car guy,' can turn a wrench for yourself and like to learn, have a good deal of disposable income, then get the Camaro. You can drive it now, keep it running, and build yourself a car you can pass down to your kids later in life - if you can afford to keep it in the family.
If you don't have any plans like that, don't really care about a car beyond how it looks and whether or not it'll get you to school or not, or don't have a lot of money to invest in repairs and/or gas, then get the Honda.
Having an old-school muscle car is becoming something for the rich and/or mechanically astute anymore.

Unless you're loaded, get a Civic. I'd look for around a '00 EX 5spd, or older. They have about 20HP more than the LX/DX, as well as niceties like PW, PL, AC, cruise, and sunroof. I prefer sedans for their versatility and possible insurance savings. Gas, repairs, and insurance are going to be serious factors for a new driver, and none of them are likely to be getting any cheaper.
Piece together a turbo kit, I/H/E with flow-thru cat, adjustable coilovers with other suspension mods, and some UHP 205/45-16s. Forget all the flashy aesthetic stuff. Take the money you saved on gas, repairs, and insurance and get yourself a small-displacement supermoto bike that gets 50+MPG and doesn't cost much to insure. Take the rest of the money and start a down-payment fund for your first piece of real estate. It'll come in handy when you get out of college.
