Default mod a d16y7 or get a b series, etc?

So I have a 99 Civic with a D16Y7 but I'm not sure if i want to start upgrading this engine or just buy another car with a B series, H22a, or at least a vtec. Tell me what you guys think!

Welcome to the forums!

First off, what's your budget and what kind of power do you want to put down? Without knowing those two things, we really can't tell you which route would be best.

I've got about 1400 right now, so i'd have to save for the new car for sure. And I'm not looking for a 400hp Civic, but definitely something that'll take off. I drove a Civic coupe with an H22a in it, and was really impressed by how powerful it was....haha of course i'm used to driving a stock sedan!

well for prices, here's what you're looking at with some of the more common swaps by the time they're in the car:

b16 - $3,000 (I wouldn't recommend swapping... $3k for 160hp and 111ft*lbs of torque isn't worth it IMO)
b18b - $3,000
b18c - $4,000
h22a - $4,000

Personally, I'm a huge fan of the h22 if you want to stay N/A; 200hp and 160ft*lbs at the crank stock is a very good starting block. Of course, you could keep your d16 and turbo it; it would take something around $2,000 for a pieced together turbo setup that would put you around 200whp.

Yeah I was told that D16's are good to turbo, but how much hp and torque can the engine handle?

according to the forced induction sticky, the y7 is good for about 200whp in stock form. Of course, for some extra money you can reinforce the bottom end and bump the safe power level up quite a bit.

I'm not sure if i want to turbo it. I know virtually nothing about them and don't think i could do it myself which is half the fun.

they're actually not as complicated as they seem; I'd suggest you do a bit of research to learn more about turbo systems, and see how you feel when you understand them better. We have a few good stickies here you could read about them.

If not, I'd suggest you save up for either a B18c swap or an H22a swap. IMO the b16 isn't worth the money, and the b18b isn't my favorite honda engine lol.
