Default Need Performance Upgrade Advice & Info

I got a 1997 Civic LX 4D... Yes i know... =) D16Y7 completely stock engine except for K&N Box Filter and of course Halo Headlights. I want to start getting into performace modifications and need some help cause I dont know which products are reliable and which are just cheap imitations. I've heard mixed things about buying parts from eBay, some say good idea others say it isnt. I want to start with the basic upgrades like Cold Air Intake, Headers, Cat, and Exhaust. I would like some suggestions on these if possible. They also need to pass CA emissions, I dont want a bunch of problems with smog and stuff.

Couple Pics... =)

Thanks in advance.

If i were you i would just buy a cheap ebay intake and then buy a much better filter for it. Then find a megan header as they are one of the best brands out and they arent going to cost to much. Then find a cat-back of your choice and in your price range. Personally im a fan of Apexi but its up to you.

yea i would start with an intake it dont really matter brand, then get some headers,(megan, dc Sports, or greddy) then go cat back exhaust, i recommend the Greddy Evo 2, i have it and it is worth it.

Ok thx i think im gonna go with a eBay CAI from a reputable seller...

I have a question about it though... The stock air intake is connected to something near the end of it near the front right fender... A big black box or something. What is that and is it important to have?

Thanks

Cold Air Intake - AEM would be realy good but expencive, or you could buy a cheap one off of ebay but replace the filter with a K&N and it should be good.
Headers - DC Sport
Cat and Exhaust - Greddy Evo 2

If u wanted a little better better performance for your money from the start without wasting money x2 on an intake you could get a Y8 intake manifold and a Y8 intake.. also in case you wanted to do a MINI ME down the road and turn your engine into a y8.. u would already have a start.. and the manifold used would be 50 bucks or less probably at junkyard or ebay..
