Old member, new question. 2001 civics?

Hey folks, looks like I'm in the market for another civic. Wow, looking at my "you last visited" thing in the top right corner was 3/2/2006. Damn.

I'm looking for something small and efficient to get me back and forth to graduate school every day. I found a 2001 civic EX, auto trans with about 100k on the clock. After doing a bit of research (on carsurvey.org and other sites) it looks like quite a few people have bad things to say about this car. Not everybody, but more than for the older generation civics.

In fact, many people in the reviews were talking about how 2001 was the first year of a new body style, and blamed manufacturing flaws on the new model year. There's a lot of talk about failed transmissions, poor gas mileage and front end weakness.

Should I be concerned about these reports? I realize there is more of a bias to respond to a survey when you're upset about a product, but I wonder what the general consensus amongst you folks is regarding this model year.

Any remarks/advice will be appreciated. Thanks-

K

I'd be leery of any automatic Civic, the transmissions just weren't very good. They can be converted to manual though. I think the 2001 had a D17 engine which is regarded as a dog by performance enthusiasts, though there don't seem to be any reliability problems.

I have the 2002 LX. Its a very good car to have, good on mileage. Well taken care of, no problems at all.

Like mk378 said, the performance on this car is absolutely horrible, but then again its a civic and not meant for that.

I had an 01' and I think I replaced every wheel bearing on that car. lol one would go out, id fix it, then another one would go like 1000 miles later haha (90,000 miles aprox.) manual trans so I cant offer any insight to the auto trans. but not any aftermarket support for them. but yea with any car the first model year is gonna kinda be the one that the manufacturer uses to get all the bugs worked out.
