Default Swap, or re bulid?

I have a 95 civic ex coupe. 1.6L sohc vtec. With 234xxx miles on her. (its having alot of problems, as I posted before she putts bad.) In March I‘ll have some xtra $$ to play with. Im wanting to do a b16a swap. plus I figure newer motor less problems like im having. Plus the power and apeal of having the sir2. But, ive had friends tell me to rebuild the d16z6. (wont rebuilding be about the same costs?) And with that much miles be a waste??

Re-building would probably be less money, but more of a headache IMO and probably more downtime with the car.

If you swap, you'll need new axles, shift linkage, the whole sha-bang. I would guess you would be looking at about at least $2k if you find a deal on everything.

There's risks either option, but rebuilding your current engine would not be a waste unless its done incorrectly. The crux is you gotta really trust the shop if you have them rebuilt it because there's a lot of little details that they can skip and screw you down the road. At that mileage the block may need the cylinders bored but it all depends on what the machine shop says. If you do some of the work yourself you can save some cash if you can sustain the downtime. I suggest getting a book to learn a little about the process before dismissing it altogether....something like this is good for starters.... Amazon.com: How to Rebuild Honda B-Series Engines (S-A Design) (9781932494785): Jason Siu: Books

Buying a swap is not without risk and hassle. I personally would do a rebuild on a current engine I know the history rather than buy a swap that has been through god knows what. Again, I would be doing the teardown and reassembly so the price is more justifiable that way (and I know I'll take the time to makes sure its rebuilt correctly). If you just want to drop your car off at the shop, then rebuilding is less of an option because it will be expensive and they can do a crappy job.

I do love my b16 but I'm not sure how much I'd be willing to go through to swap one in if I didn't already have it....

Research the place you plan on buying from. I have heard of numerous bad stories about tigerjapanese.com
