Was there stock 1996-1998 civics with obd1 ecu?
I bought my 96 civic used 4 years ago. Dont know how much changes/swap have been made before. It has now a JDM D15B non-vtec. P2C-Y01 obd1 ecu. Head is P2A-8 with an encircled 96 on the right.Distributor has 7 wires. Motor seems to have been changed before. ECU and harness dont have signs of having been changed or modified. My friend has a 97 civic, d15z4, p2c-a01 obd1. His car doesnt show signs of having an engine and ecu swap. The d15z4 is the most common engine I have seen in civics here in saudi arabia. Lots of people say that 96 and above are obd2 and unchippable.
Im confused. Has anybody encountered before situations similar to these or have an idea to my query? The car has now 520K kms (320K miles) on it and now running rough. Im preparing myself to replace the motor with a b16a if I can find a good condition unit that has low milage . Help me identify the items I currently have that I can retain and what else will I replace (ecu, harness, tranny etc). Would it be better if I just chip my ecu and wire vtec? Pls confirm also that my ecu is an obd1. FAQ illustrations doesnt show one exactly like it.

From my knowledge, 96 civics are obd2a.
Found in:
1996–2000 Honda Ballade/Civic in South Africa, Venezuela, and Trinidad & Tobago
Displacement : 1,493 cc (91.1 cu in)
Bore and Stroke : 75 × 84.5 mm (3.0 × 3.33 in)
Power : 90 hp (67 kW) or 105 hp (78 kW) at 5,800 rpm
Torque : 99–103 lb·ft (134–140 N·m) :confirm? at 4,200 rpm
Redline : 7,200 rpm
Rev-limiter: 7,411 rpm
Valvetrain : SOHC non-VTEC, four valves per cylinder
Head Code : P2A-9
Fuel Control : SFI (Simple Fuel Injection)
Ecu Code : P2C/P2E

tnx.
That's why it confuses me coz my friend and I both have p2c obd1 and in where i am, its unlikely that people here would change an ecu and harness from obd2 to obd1 and still using stock engine.
Actually I was the one who placed the P2C on wiki-. All the while I thought I have obd2. Please confirm from the pics if it is obd1 or obd2a.
ps. my rev limit is 6200rpm only.

That seems to be the answer. OBD2 compliance is required in US and not a manufacturing standard of HONDA on all civics sold outside US. tnx a lot
