Hi Guys,

I own a Civic 2001, in the engine bay where the vin number is it reads ES8 and the vin number starts with JHMES8xxx, the engine is marked as D15Y4, strangely there is little or no information available on the internet for this engine. I have bought the car second hand from someone, on the car's registration papers, it lists the cars as being imported from Japan, since all cars from Japan are apparently branded as JDMxxx i am a little lost.

In regards to the specs, I cannot find any for my car so I don't know whether it's a 115hp or the 130hp version. it's sure got VTEC and I have had the chance to get the VTEC to engage at 4500 rpm.

Any help would be more than appreciated so that I can get to know my car a bit more.

The D15Y4 is the 115hp version. The D15 series for 2001-2005 have sacrificed peak power for more torque (than the previous D15B that made 130hp). This makes sense since they've improved the transmission in this generation. The D16W9 in this generation produces ~127-130hp. The D17A2 also provides more torque while sacrificing peak power. The D15 would provide the best rod/stroke ratio (being closer to square) than the D16/D17, so you can feel more confident revving it in redline.

I have a D15Y4 too, but it is in the EU1 chassis (think of a 5-door EP3 hatchback). I did a manual gearbox conversion on mine, and it is even more fun to drive


The D15Y4 comes with VTEC-E, but it is is no slouch at 4,500rpm (unless you have an Automatic or CVT wasting potential whp). Although VTEC-E is for economy, I wouldn't recommend adjusting the VTEC cross-over point unless you were going boost or changed the camshaft to a CROWER aftermarket model for the D17A.

Note: The D15, D16, D17 in the 2001-2005 series uses the SAME head (including camshaft). The D16W9 is the only difference in which it has 2 VTEC solenoids to switch from VTEC-E -> normal cam profile ->VTEC (to get the full 130hp and a nice fat powerband). The only other difference would be a VTEC vs non VTEC head. The real component that sets each engine apart is the ECU that it is shipped with.

what about the D15Y3 non vtec version how much HP does it have ?

 

D15Y4 and D15Y3 non Vtec have the same horsepower its 115 hp but their peak power is 117 hp im talking about the D15Y4 non vtec version here D15Y4 Vtec-E version has 127 or 128 hp.
