Default VTEC

I know that VTEC is either SOHC or DOHC, and that it comes in E,i, and other models. But is VTEC the only way to go in a honda? Is non-VTEC crap? I know what VTEC does with the cam, but is it really noticable compared with the NON-VTEC? Also VTEC-E works best at low rpm, so does that mean that the car is slower or more likely to blow at hgh rpm? I am just wondering about this, and would like very much to know. So if you can reply with what you know it would be appreciated.

Hey I did not want to make a new post. I am looking into getting a car.Tell me if this sounds good? Or if there are any problems you see or model problems let me know. This car is classic.
88 hatch with 5spd. 137,000mi.
Extreme conversion Honda Civic race seats race steering tacho with shift light custom exhaust body stiffeners custom tail lights ground effects speckled paint Great mpg super cool new tires battery door poppers CD shop manual $3500 OBO Or is this car 4 spd?

Here is the other. IT is 5 spd mannual. Also it has 180,000mi. 93 Civic Hatch. $2500 OBO
Still looks good and runs beautiully despite its age, and gets inspiring fuel economy (40 mpg hwy). The 1.6L Si engine is capable of zippy acceleration. The black paint, tinted windows, and Civic styling still turn heads. Some systems are showing their age. The A/C no longer seems to function, and the rear wiper stopped working. The sunroof needs a helping hand to keep it from jamming. And like most Civics of its generation, it has some rust at the top of the rear wheel wells.

take a look at this

VTEC engines are the best engines that honda has made. Honda engines that don't have VTEC in them, are really not that powerful.

However, for many people tuning turbocharged applications, or with other very high power applications, people like not having to bother with managing vtec.

Vtec lets the engine turn into a mini race engine, It kicks up the power especially in dohc. But if your not all too interested in going fast, a non vtec is fine, you will have great gas mileage.

What about the VTEC-E. Does it lower the max rpm. I know that it is built to run better at low speeds, but what about if you ran it fast. Would that be dangerous?

Where do you live? because those prices seem outrageous for those old cars.

i agree. Dont pay more than 2g for a 91 or lower civic. Even 2g is a bit high, but the condition of the car is still a factor.

Before you buy a civic, MAKE SURE THE TIMING BELT HAS BEEN DONE, or you know when it has been done. The timing belt can kill a honda like a shot to the back of the head... It can cause a lot of damage to the engine that may not be worth replacing. If you want speed, go for the SI. If you want mileage, go for Cx, or Hx. But make sure you buy a 5spd. Auto's suck! lol
