Default Whats a good Civic for my girlfriend to buy?

Hey all Honda newbie here. My gf is looking for another car and is leaning toward a used Civic (mid 90's-early 2000's) she likes the way they look and needs good dependable transportation. I was hoping to get some info on the more desirable years and models before I get her one. The only mods I really look to do on it before I give it to her might be tinted windows, rims, suspension, and a nice stereo.

She has to have automatic. Are the automatic Civics durable? Engine suggestions?

Is she more interested in performance or fuel efficiency?

She doesnt need a rocket sled but if she needs to get around an 18 wheeler (rather quickly) I want her to be able to go when she hits the gas. But she drives alot so mileage is important too...I guess what would be best would be a nice compromise between efficiency and performance.

I would suggest that you shop for a stock 92-95 Civic EX, which has a D16Z6 engine. It will have pep but still get good gas mileage.

Thanks for the input that sounds good to me and thats a nice body style too. How do I find out if it has that engine in it? Did all of those years have it or is there something in particular I need to look for?

To my knowledge, only EX models had the D16Z6. The other models had rather gutless D15b7, D15B8, or D15Z1 engines. Look for the type stamped on the engine. Make sure the VIN and engine type agree.

Ok great thanks I'll keep my eyes open. Her car isnt going to last much longer so Im on the hunt for her Honda. She is totally oblivious to me getting her one this soon, I wanna buy it and have it ready for Valentines Day. Im hoping to find a decent one by then.

I'm with RonJ, 92-95 Civic EX is a good choice. If you find a good deal on a 99-00 Civic EX, they are a little more current and still pretty good looking. (I'm not a fan of the 96-98 front end, personally.)
