Why do automatic hondas shift at redline?????

Today i noticed that when my friend was driving in his 01 Civic i noticed that if shift at redline. And another friend of my has a 00 Accord and it also shift at redline.

Why do they shift at redline??? Is it just a honda thing????

Probably because when they take off they floor the gas...

I have a friend with a 99 EX and it shifts around 4000-4500ish unless he gets on it.

if you "get on it", it will do that to save the tranny. if your taking your time, it'll shift before.

getting on it tells your tranny that you are in it for the power, haha, so it will shift like you want it to. Driving normally, it will do its job and shift lower at like 3-4 grand.

yea i only get close to redline if i floor it. if thiers shift like that normally then there could be some problems

The engine speed at which it shifts is proportional to how much gas you give it. If you're pegging it out, the torque converter won't release/slip enough to allow it to shift until you hit redline. However, the ECU will not allow it an AT to break redline.

I can take my AT up to about 8500-8600 before it shifts on my GSR, Pretty soon im going to get the head ported and polished, put in either a combo of spoon cams & camgears/mugen valvesprings, or all Skunk2, to get it breathing better and release a few more rpm's, I don't know exactly what i want yet
As far as the old D16Y8 / AT that was in it, it would shift out anywhere from 3000-4000 rpm's and about 6000 or so when i was on it.

You have an A/T in a GSR????????

i believe the GSR's had an auto option while the Type R's were manual only. Personally, I would never buy an automatic. It's just no fun. You can do so much more with a manual. Yes, traffic can be a bitch at times, but it's not that big a deal. the fun factor of manual outweighs the problems in traffic.
