D16Y7 Exhaust Manifold Compatibility

Hey guys...I found out my exhaust manifold has the dreaded "crack" at the Y intersection. I can smell exhaust fumes inside the car when the windows are up..I'm assuming this is part of the reason. The previous owner tried to weld it back closed, and it semi-worked. I also have a bolt broken off into the manifold, so only one bolt is holding the heat shield on currently.

Anyways, on to my question: what other exhaust manifolds are the same as the one I have now? I have a D16Y7 motor ... 1.6L non-VTEC, on a 1997 Civic LX. I was told I'd have to find a 96-98 Civic DX or LX and these should work? My exhaust manifold and catalytic converter seem to be one piece. I'm going to be calling some people on Craigslist to see if they have the manifold and it'd sure save some time to know the vehicles that would be compatible. Thanks for any help!

96-00 Civic DX/LX/HX/CX should work. Anything that is not an EX or SI in the 96-00 range.

Thank you! I was debating whether or not I should try to find one used, or if I should bite the bullet and buy one online for $200-$300. In my county, I have to pass emissions yearly. I was thinking that since the catalytic converter AND the exhaust manifold are in one piece...wouldn't it be high-risk to buy one used, knowing that either the crack could occur or the filter could be bad/go bad? What do you think?

100% of those style manifolds will crack down the middle. There's really nothing you can do but buy one and hope for the best. But that gives you the opportunity to take your old one to a shop and have it welded properly so it'll be ready in the future.

just a question... i need clarification.

I was told even the EX manifold would fit on a y7 but you need the down pipe and cat with the manifold because of the y7 having the cat attached to the manifold.

Please correct me if im mistaken. Just trying to learn.

Edit... Found this while searching HCF, it was a sticky already, might help you out KoKo4, i know i learned from it.

If you have a USDM EX manifold, then yes, you would need the header, downpipe, and cat, plus some modification to the rest of the exhaust. Because the catalytic converter is separate and twice the size of the DX cat, you would have to have a shop cut some of the pipe off and weld the pipe to make it fit. You would also need O2 sensor extension wires. (Better to buy actual extension harnesses than to splice wires.)

A CDM Civic EX = USDM Si, which would have a different engine. (B series versus D series.)

Thanks guys. I ended up finding a replacement exhaust manifold / CAT combo for $170 shipped on eBay. I installed it and it works fine! Had to make the three holes that attach to the rest of the exhaust SLIGHTLY bigger, but other than that, it was a direct fit!

Just curious, what brand did you buy? I bought an aftermarket one and it stopped working after about 2000 miles.

Actually, if we're talking EK here, it's the CDM Civic SiR that has the B. The Civic EX is a 4 door with a Y8.

WellFedHobo 11-01-2012 01:48 PM

Derp, shoulda remembered the SiR

Are you talking about the CDM or USDM version of the EX? The USDM EX is a 2 dr coupe with the y8, not a 4 dr.

There are USDM EX sedans. I've been in several.

Reprinted from Wiki :
rims available in the sedan body style were the EJ6 (US DX/LX/VP, Canadian EX/LX), EJ8 (US EX), EJ9 (1.4L SOHC model), EK1 (1.5L SOHC VTEC-E model), EK2 (1.3L model), EK3 (1.5L SOHC model), EK4 (Japanese SiR, European SiR and/or VTi), EK5 (Japanese 1.6L SOHC 4WD model), EK8 (Japanese 1.6L SOHC model) and EN1 (US GX).

i apologize sir, it looks like the EJ8 was in fact available as a sedan. I have never seen one, most i see around here are lx or dx models and all the ex seem to be coupe.

Since you have seen them do you know if the stock tail lights on the 4 dr ex are the same as the 2 dr ex? meaning are they red on top clear on bottom? Because i like that style but cant seem to find them for my 4 dr that arent cheap ebay lights.

All sedan tails are the same in that they're larger. 96-98 is one style, 99-00 is the other style. But both are still that larger kind.

All coupe tails are smaller than sedan tails. But I believe they're the same, 96-98 is one style, 99-00 is another.

I have some 99-00 ebay ones that have held up okay over the years, red/clear style. They occasionally need to be resealed.

If you have a 97 sedan and you want the red/clear style, you want to source some Canadian Acura 1.6 EL outer tail lights. They are red on top, clear on bottom, a direct bolt on fit, and are clean as hell. The Honda Domani tail lights are the same, but that's Japan only and much more expensive.

I like those! and i have been researching a Domani front end conversion because no one around here has ever seen one and although i shouldn't slam where i live but half the people here are to stupid to know what a jdm, or cdm or edm car is. But i digress, lol, when switching to those tail lights im assuming the outside ones are a direct bolt on?
Then what about the inside ones? The ones on the EL are different shape... is the trunk lid swapabble? (is that a word?)

Thanks for your input!

WellFedHobo 11-16-2012 11:04 AM

The outside ones are a direct bolt on. The trunk lid is a direct swap and yes, the inner tails are different. But the outer ones blend seamlessly with the USDM inner ones. I was gonna do the swap and had the trunk lid in my hands, but UPS decided to drop it off Niagra Falls on the way to me, so it was destroyed...

Ahhh i just did a little googling, because it wasnt clicking for a second but when i bought my car it had some busted a** altezzas on the back.... so the whole oem tail light thing i was oblivious to. If i had the stock tails i would have red and clear on the inside and would just have to replace the outside ones. I get it now.... gee learn something new every day.

Dude they dropped your trunk lid off a waterfall??? wtf?

Again thanks for the input. I have been finding alot of helpful people, and useful information on this site.

WellFedHobo 11-16-2012 11:53 AM

Not literally off a waterfall but it was pretty messed up.

zerojett 11-18-2012 03:05 PM

I really don't think I packaged it well enough either. I didn't make it idiot proof. The lid was supposed to be a minimum of 1 inch from the outer packaging.

I saw a comment somewhere explaining why Canada got the EL and the US didn't. Something like, Japan likes Canada more. Might explain the SiR badges on the EK... and the "Special Edition" CRX....

I think we have a 2 door EX but I'm not totally sure. This is neat.
