Default Exhaust problem

Why would my cars exhaust note change from loud as hell to much quieter and then when at idle I can hear the deep exhaust note sill but there is also a raspy sputtering/forcing air kind of noise coming from the mufflers as well. I listened for other leaks under the car but could not here anything. Is this possibly a muffler defect or could it be a duel n1 muffler setup causing this? (This is on a sr20det 180sx)

does it change to quiet while you are driving, or do you mean like one day it was loud and the next day it was quiet?

hey nice del sol there yes it was loud the first few days i had it back, then it just seemed to get quieter, and now it has a wierd air sputter/rasp to it at idle only, instead of the deep tone it had before. Im not sure i think it still has the same amount of power though.

air sputter seems it could be the engine pinging. might be an ignition timing issue. jump the service connector under the passenger side of the dash, check the ignition timing with a timing light and adjust as necessary.
