Default Gutting a cat...

OK, so I thought the subject was funny. Sorry kittycat lovers

A looong time ago, I had a friend that recommended gutting the catalytic converter to thwart the visual emmisions testing and increase performance.

He told me to hack the exhaust after the cat and take a monster "cork screw" drill bit and destroy the element inside the cat. Once the insides are crumbled he said to fire up the engine and blow the crap out the back. I'm guessing it would increase flow and change the tone of the system.

What's everbody's opinion on this?

In some states, (if not a majority) if you're above a certain dB, then it's a noise ordenance violation, and you could be pulled over, I'd check with your laws before attempting that.

DAMN, I think you guys got the wrong idea. After you blow out all of the catalyst material, you put the exhaust system back together.

I've never heard of it but i would think cutting the top open, removing the "junk" then welding it back together would work a little better. Even if you pass the visual tho, that **** will be loud *** hell.

Forgive me for being naive about this, but what is the internal composition of a resonator?

Is it alot like a muffler?

Thanks POLO708, but I was wondering what the inside of a RESONATOR was.

Well, I looked on How Stuff Works and came to the conclusion that the resonator is a muffler tuned to cancel out the other frequencies that the muffler doesn't take care of.
