Default Intake/Exhaust questions

Hi guys,

I'm new to the civic world (see introductions) and I'm looking to modify slightly my 1994 Si on a budget.

I'm looking for a better intake and exhaust sound together with a small increase in HP and throttle response.

I have a budget of 800 dollars and I'm looking to do the following:

Cold air intake

Header

Remove cat (test pipe)

mid/rear exhaust

Remap OBD1

Could anyone let me know what the best value for money products are out there for these kind of modifications. There are so many cheap suppliers and I dont want to waste money on crap that yields no gain.

Also in terms of exhaust I'm not looking to wake up the neighbours and have something that sounds like a ships horn, just something a little louder at higher rpm but similar to stock at idle and low rpm.

Any help would be great.

Thanks guys

On the D16z6, I/H/E will not net you much hp. I would guess no more than 10-15hp with tuning.

I would put that $800 towards something else IMO if you are simply just trying to get more power(unless the parts are needed to replace worn/damaged OEM parts!)

What are your plans for the car? What kind of power would you like to see out of it?

I will suggest the Apexi WS2 exhaust, but I recommend everyone to go to youtube, search Civic exhaust and start listening to video clips and pick what you like best.

$145 - Megan Racing Header
$100 - AEM Short Ram

For exhaust check out the Apexi WS2, Tanabe Hypermedallion (the one that looks like the WS2), and other oval-shaped muffler exhausts

And I strongly recommend against the test pipe for a number of reasons...

1. Without a catalytic converter, you are producing way more carbon monoxide (that sh*t is poisonous you know... a danger to yourself and others around you), hydrocarbons (which lead to ground-level o-zone), and nitrogen oxides (contributes to smog and acid rain, and also causes irritation to human mucus membranes).

2. Removing the catalytic converter is illegal in all 50 states and most other modern countries. Wondering why? See #1

3. A high flow catalytic converter (not those fake ones on ebay that are actually test pipes) is a safe alternative, and while not as cheap as a straight-through pipe, it is still not that expensive. The power gain difference between a test pipe and a high flow catalytic converter is a negligible amount.

Dyno test of test pipe vs. high flow catalytic converter on a 99-00 Civic Si:

and then the lesser important reasons...

4. Raspier exhaust tone
5. worse smelling exhaust, possibly noticed from inside the car as well as around you

In most cases it is because they are cheap and they don't care about anyone but themselves and their little ~1 HP gain... usually people think that a test pipe is going to give them huge gains.

... and then there are the few people who actually run a test pipe for a legitimate reason (track car, or a daily driver with turbo, supercharger, or nitrous... but you don't need a test pipe unless you are melting catalytic converters like i've read someone with nitrous was having the problem with)

Not to go off topic but people run test pipes because they think cats are restrictive when in reality they really arent.

Back on topic. $800 bucks wont get you far. That wont even get you the I/H/E combo and a tune. So i suggest you spend that $800 on suspension because you will atleast be able to enjoy that with the slow D motor. Boost/superchargers are your only real way to gain noticeable and worthy power. +1 for the WS2 Exhaust, best sounding aftermarket exhaust imo, but nothing beats the stock sound....sleathy =)

Try a magnaflow catback exhaust setup. It'll run you about $392.

I removed the cat on my car because of my header and now, it does put out some serious fumes sometimes. i smell it when i stop and the wind blows it past my windows. If i wasnt too complacent, i would get the universal magnaflow catalytic converter.

Just wondering, if you had an aftermarket intake and header, would stock exhaust be just as good as a cheap catback or more expensive one? Because I don't really want to waste to much money on an exhaust system.
