Best spray for painting rims?
Im planning on spraying my stock rims black, was wondering what best quality/value type of spray to use that wont peel, protects from weather, etc would be?
I have leftover krylon black enamel and clearcoat, would this be sufficient? also, anyone have opinions on what color would go good with gold (titanium metalic) 6th gen and silver 5 spoke wheel covers? I tried spraying rims metallic green, it looked good in my head, but turned out gay so i scraped it off. wish i could afford nice rims :/ |
I used Krylon gloss black enamel and clearcoat and just rattle canned mine. They turned out fine. It took me 2 cans of black and 1 of clear, though.
Dude, you've got a YR-525M Titanium Metallic 6th gen too? If so, my sig is out of date. PICS PLZ. [edit] Silver looks good against the gold, black looks fine (check my project thread for pics of some black 5 spoke rims against the gold). I was gonna color match some to the body but decided against it. Now I'm going for some factory Civic Si rims, so silver again. |
I used some automotive enamel spray cans from pepboys for the black coats, and for clear coat I used Duplicolor wheel paint. It is a little tougher clear in my opinion and will help protect your wheels from chips and such. I used 3 cans of black and 1 clear. And one can of Rustoleum Bare Metal primer.

well best paint to use... some real paint in a quart with some hardener with a real spray gun...
rattle cans are only so good and dont put it very thick and definatly not hard enough to with stand dirt and debri while spinnen fast. |
As far as spray can wheel paint, Duplicolor makes a great wheel specific paint.
As usual prep is the key. I've used it a couple of times on daily driver/offroading vehicles (much easier to touch up than powder coat). Took a real beating and the only damage was from grinding the wheel lip against rocks, etc... |
Duplicolor Wheel Paint
available at your local auto parts store |

i used adhesion promoter.. rustoleum primer... some sanding..more adhesion promoter... and rustoleum bronze on my wheels... and they are too bad... they do chip a bit.. but only because i was beating them in my garage when my tool box fell on them:(.. oh well a new spray takes 5 mins.
