lol, what does this have to do with appearance. this would be better suited in the transmission section...

You just need the shifter. It will come with everything necessary. I also recommend some energy suspension shifter bushings you can find on ebay for like $12. They make the shifter smoother and gives it a better feel.
anyway, here's the DIY:

+1 for the bushings, they are cheap and easy to install since you're down there messing with the linkage, +1 for what does this have to do wit appearance?, and also with the eBay, truth be told its a risk of the shifter breaking. They are few and far between (when this happens), but it could be you and be dangerous if you are on the freeway or something. I have one and its done it's job just fine, but i've heard of them breaking on a few people. I think Skunk2 and B&M makes a much more expensive but a much much solid short shifter if you got the dough.

There are a lot of manual hx civics out there. The automatic ones suck

I knew I was. I just remember all HX's I've seen were Auto.

For the shifter, I would recommend anything steel. Ebay shifters are usually made from aluminum, allowing them to break "easier" (as some/everyone has mentioned). I have a Skunk2 single bend short shifter. Cost me $105 with the weighted Skunk2 shift **** (from Ebay). However, the Ebay shifters I have seen as low as $20 shipped.

Keep in mind that when you buy a ebay shifter, manufacturer information is usually not available. Even though I bought my skunk2 shifter from Ebay, I was able to call Skunk2 when I ran into a problem and the Customer Service Rep. kindly walked me through the remaining steps I needed for installation. Good Luck with whatever path you choose to take!

Alot of HX's are auto because they had a special trans that was different from the other auto civics, the auto version of the HX has a continuously variable transmission (CVT), so its basically a 1-speed automatic that uses belts to adjust the gear ratios as you drive. This is why the HX is rated to get higher fuel economy than the others. But they did make them in manual as well
