painting....
alright im just gonna get to the point, im doing a repaint myself, cause i really couldnt afford to take it to a shop and have them do it because of some rust issues. See picture.

after going to the body shop to see how much it would be to get if fixed they told me they would have to replace the panel..for 1300$, and i dont have the funding for that type of work. So in recent weeks i have started doing my own work, filling in holes from a previose spoiler that ih ave removed, removing emblems and surfacer rust. And i have recently cut out that rust and strip and remaining rust from my car and filled in the whole with fiberglass. I know im probably doing a big NO NO to my car but its mine and i really dont have the funding to pay for that plus a whole new paint job because the black has all but faded now.
So my plans are to repaint with just black again, i have obtained a gallon of super gloss jet black, a gallon of primer. My question is about how much is needed to do ONE coat of primer and base for the car? Im doing a 95 Honda civic 2 door so its not really big. I know what im getting myself into. So please just answer the question for me.

Assuming you've stripped the car of the original paint, or at least sanded the whole car like crazy, a gallon should be more than enough to prime it. I'd recommend at least 2 coats of black and a few coats of clear coat. A gallon will probably do 2 coats for the black. Get an extra gallon to be safe and if you don't need it you'll have plenty of touch-up paint. Better to have plenty than to run out halfway through.
well when painting its all about experience........trial and error......eventually u can get it right (assuming u have the right tools).......just be patient and take ur time. You are goin to want to paint it sloooooowly and use a light coat......and apply another light coat........and repeat until it looks best.
oh and PS.......if it were me instead of bondoing or fiberglassin that rust id just get a new fender from a junkyard and sand and paint that 1. While ur at it.......paint those rear drums black.....theyre rustin too.

One of my employees recently shaved his handles with fibergalss and within months it was saggin and cracking because the galss has a hard time sticking to metal. Not sure if you know how to weld but it would be a great time to learn with a cheap like 150 dollar welder just to get a good backing to the glass and or Bondo. I like that you are doing it yourself cause you have no cash right now, I think to many people put stuff off cause they cant afford it when they could do it them selves. I think the key is take your time and be picky and meticulas about your work.
I am primering my 93 hatch white and have bought a gaollon as I was told that should be enough.

Yeah its about almost impossible here in michigan to find that fender i need beacuse it seems like everyone else has the same rust problem as me, i was almost able to score a complete fender from a guy on ebay and i was gonna have it welden on, but the deal fell through and i didnt want that to rust anymore because i want to repaint my car.
I've been seraching all over for that panel and for a brand new one its like 500$ bucks, so yeah thats not worth my time.
Along with welding i really wouldnt know where to start what to do or anything i would be more lost with that than i am fiberglassing
I do plan on stripping the paint probably down to the OEM primer and just spraying over that the best i can.
IF the fiberglass sags and cracks..than it does i jjust need a quick fix for right now and maybe sooner or later i can have someone weld a peice.
About the paint and junk yeah i emailed HOK (house of kolor) and they guy said about 3-4 quarts for the car so i guess ill need to pick up atleast 2 gallons of black just incase.
everyone thanks for your input im glad i joined this Forum! i have a feeling ill be comming here a lot!.

MichiganRice22 if you want hit me up on AIM (x315Customsx) and I'll give you some pointers. I do all my own body work. I've done a front end conversion, shaved handles, antenna, hood squirters etc etc and I'm not as good as some guys who been doing for 20 or more years but I have so far about 15 happy customers and I've only being doing it about 4 months (well other peoples cars, I've been doing my own for a while).
