Please explain HID
 

I'm still new at this. I would like for someone to justify buying a pair of projector light conversions for about $250 when you can get the bright blue bulbs for about $30. Also it appears that HIDs need their own powering unit. Is there something I just don't understand about this other than a completely different housing? Oh, it says to use the factory bulbs. That means that the light will not be very bright like the Lexus.

first thing is that the 30 dollar bulbs cannot be compared to HID's. HID systems are way brighter than the replacement bulbs. the point of the replacement housing is to aim the hids better (to my underestanding). What i have heard on here is that when you buy the projecter housings most of them say to not replace the factory bulbs with HIDs for some reason. (probably due to the heat) but most people do it any way. the other option is to put hids in the factory housing, but people say that you get pulled over more. so i guess it is if you think it is worth it. ( I am pretty sure the above is correct but feel free to correct me if i am wrong cuz i am learning too:))

HID generates a brighter light as well as the shape of the light created is completely different from halogen (like the difference between an incandecent and led's light). The reason most projector units say not for hid use is because thier optics (lenses and bowls) aren't as high quality as OE hid units are and so the manufacturer doesn't want a lawsuit.


Most people use projector units with hid pnp because the projectors have a cut off shield installed in them to controll the light output......... this works loads better than the casper shields and shielded hid pnp bulbs in the oe housings (there is less room for random light scatter and less likely for glare, uplight).

o ya highly agree!

the cheap blue or what ever colored bulbs REALY SUCK!!!!!!!
those colored bulbs may look beter than stock BUT the light output will REALY SUCK!!!!!!!!!!

i tried em before on my old jimmy. they looked cool BUT the light output was HORIBLE!!!!!!!! realy hard to see at night!

i slaped in some HIDs 6Ks in it and the light output was REALY NICE!!!!!!
i sold the jimmy back to my dad and he loves the HIDs! before he could hardly see at night!


eventualy ill slap in some 6K hids in my civic.
i dont care abotu glare on other people ;)
why should i........................
thiers always that truck behind me with thier lights so high im blinded!!!!!!!

Ok, thanks! This information has been very helpful. When I traveled from Vegas to LA and back last night, I paid close attention to the light output of the vehicles that passed by. I did notice that every Lexus that I saw had an even spread of light that covered the entire road. I then saw a Nissan with the blue bulbs and there was no comparison. Qucik question. From the link below, which color scheme would work the best for a '02 gold Civic coupe.

well if ya dont use some factory HID housings then the light output wont be as even!

those are totaly designed for that car... most HID add ons just plug into your existing housing which has been designed for halogen bulbs not HID bulbs.
so definatly do not expect to have that sweet light displacement!

ok if you look at the link you posted those are Projector and those also use " (Use factory light bulbs)"

so if you bought those youd just have some projectors....
the HID lights are just that. ;)
a transformer and the bulb which plugs into your existing housing.. either stock or those projectors you linked....


now some people have RETRO fited OEM HIDs into thier stock or projector housings... BUT that is alot of work as well as expensive cause the stock housings arent cheap even on ebay that you still have to hack up and make em fit in your headlights..

hardest part is most OEM HID housings are realy deep mounting!
and you also want to custom wire up these HIDs... tho they do use less power BUT on initial fire up they draw alot of juice... so its best to just use a relay to power them from the battery and activated by your stock headlight wires.


these HIDs are what most people buy...

ya to retro fit them it is!!!!!!!
but i personaly dont care about glare ;)

to me in real life the glare isnt that bad and yes ive driven in front of him and headon to him several times and its not bad at all! i have a harder time with those lifted trucks or just REALY BADDLY ADJUSTED headlights alot of people drive around with!

im just gonna buy the HID kit and just twist em into my stock housings!
and i also want to eventualy have my headlights and tail lights tinted for more of a total black out look.... but i know the HIDs will shine right tho just as good as the stocks!

only downfall with HIDs is if you have a dual fillement bulb... well ya loose your bright lights!
