shift knob removal question

My friend just gave me his old momo shift knob that cost him 75$ new and im trying to put it in my 01 civic. I got the actual knob off, but im having difficuly with the plastic gold colored ring under it. I feel like im going to rip the fake leather stuff. Anyone know the teqnique to get it off? Also I am going to need and adapter to get the new knob to fit right, it has 3 alan screws that hold it in place instead of threads. I dont feel like buying one. Is there any way to ghetto the adapter piece nicely?

It has screws to hold it in place??? sounds like a cheap knob. i saw some of those led knobs at the auto store, and thats how they connected, but i wouldnt trust that.
