civic costs against vw diesel
Hi
so its now time to change my vw jetta diesel. I do about 60000kms per year, Vdub costs $28k to $31k cdn to buy, costs about $55.00 per week on fuel, per 1000kms, service costs about $1000 per year, depreciation is about $5000 per year so I can get back what I owe VW and get a bit of equity, so now is the big question,
Honda Civic costs about $18000 approx does anyone know the other costs and does anyone do high mileage? I own Honda stuff like quads, generators, mowers so I know the reliabilty, just need to know costs... thanks. I could keep the right for a while -say 10 years

1000kms = 625 miles..
i used to drive around 860 miles a week in my 98, ran me about $70 a week in gas, service costs were around $1100 last year, but that includes brakes (twice), timing belt, waterpump, serp belts, new mid exhaust pipe, full tune up, and regular oil changes

To put it simply. VW will certainly get better MPG then a Civic. If I had a diesel car, I would convert it to veggie oil, so I wouldn't have to pay anything for fuel. As far as maintenance is concerned, Civic will end up costing less, because there are less things that will break and parts are much cheaper then those for VW. A lot of VWs potential malfunctions are related to the electrical system - especially sensors.
Hi
further research shows costs being about $1100.00 per year in favour of civic. Although I cannot determine depreciation of Civic. I thank you all for your input and will probably buy on preference and comfort.

probably less than $1k/year depreciation...
I bought a 5 year old civic 3 years ago, and it was still blue booked over 10k, currently blue booked at a bit over $6k, but I have high mileage, just under 7k with low mileage
so figure average 8 years old, 7k less than its original going price... just around $900 a year in depreciation... v a vw which is probably closer to $1500 a year or more
The only problem with VWs is that when something doesnt work right you will pay ALOT to fix it. I personally wish I had a TDI jetta over the civic, my father and a friend actually make their bio diesel for their trucks and have build a big garage/shed thing for the processing unit... it is huge and expensive, but when it puts out fuel for 55 cents per gallon it will pay itself off within 3 years! Filling a ford f350truck for less than 15 bucks, HAHAHAHA!
VWs are notorious for electrical problems and i personally would never buy one. Also, diesel costs $0.50 more than premium fuel in Chicago so I don't really know about the diesel bieng better on fuel (at least in Chicago, i know in other places diesel is cheaper). If you are going to use bio-diesel then you will save a crap load on diesel fuel. If i was going to get a diesel car it would have to be and old MB diesel or a truck.

Notorious? Have you ever owned a VW? The may have minor electrical malfunctions, but nothing that would prevent the car from being driveable.
