I have a radar detector. I agree that it's not all that useful when you're already speeding, since getting hit by the radar means it's already too late. I do find that it's quite useful if I'm thinking about speeding If I'm at a light or at a pretty open section of road and looking for a little race, the detector helps me make sure there's no cops in the immediate area. It's saved me numerous times at intersections where there's a cop just a few cars back.

 

radar detectors help...but aren't 100%. i just got a speeding ticket 2 weeks ago. damn thing never went off.

 

Does anyone know anything about the brand "phazer"?

 

I don't have one, but I wanted to get one for a long time.
Right now what's keeping me from speeding too much is high gas prices.
I'd like to get a GPS too

 

my radr has that VG2 thingy on it, and it like detects the cops radar B4 he detects you!!!it seems to help me, plus if you get radard and slow down right away, they usually dont do anything...

 

Q for the people with radar detectors:

how often does your dectector warn you before you get to the cop tagging people with his radar gun on the highway?

Of course cops can get you if they're sneaky enough, but I'll take "works most of the time" as good enough for me

 

90% of the time...plus I already know where they usually sit...

 

im with marty. i speed so little that even if i got pulled over every time i sped more than 5 over a radar detector wouldnt pay for itself.

 

If you are bent on getting a radar detector get one that has a front and rear mount sensor. Valentine is best and yes it costs. If you are making road trips get a CB radio . they are not illegal anywhere and tune it to channel 19 .the truckers will tell you where the cops are hidden long before you get there,you don't have to say anything,just listen. They will also route you around accidents and avoid long waits sitting on the highway. I have used all kinds of radar detectors but the cb radio is infallible,virtually useless in town though,that's where the detector comes in.

 

the main thing to remember when buying a radar detector is that it does not make you invincible. but to say they are pointless.. is just wrong. they help. radar detectors are not an excuse to drive fast. but for those of you who drive 5-10 over pretty much all the time (just like myself) just to keep up with traffic in your area.. its nice to have that little upper hand. granted its easy for cops to beat radar detectors.. but think about it. most cops are NOT hell bent on giving you a speeding ticket. so only the really sneaky ones are going to do the little tricks like flip on the radar soon as you go by. but for the most part, writing tickets is unnecessary paperwork for a cop and they're not gunna go out of their way to catch you.

lets pretend for a second however that all cops want to give youa ticket. and lets say theres 10 cops in your town radaring at one time. and 5 of them are trying to be sneaky, and the other 5 just have their radar on. with a radar detector. at least youre going to be warned for half of those. radars dont mean you cant get a ticket. but they give you a fighting chance.

i think we can all agree that not speeding is the only way to not geta ticket... but seriously. thats like telling a teenager that he shouldnt have sex till theyre married or they'll get a girl pregnant. they have 3 options.. abstinence... (yea right) use a rubber (or some sort of birth control)... or just risk it... (and be screwed).

its all about using your detector smart.. and not driving like a douche. speeding.. and driving downright wreckless are 2 different things.
