A lady came into the store and in the course of the conversation wondered which car was the most American, a Buick made in Canada or a Toyota made in Arkansas? Guys, I hate to remind you, but you are talking about where the home office is, not where the car is made. My Honda WAS made in America. Where was yours made? Almost all cars made today are WORLD cars with parts from many countries.

My Trek bicycle has:

Frame tubes from Taiwan,
Welded in India,
Painted in China,
Brakes, shifters and other parts from assorted Maylasian countries,
Rims from Belgium,
Tires from Japan,
Seat from Italy,

Yet the sticker on the bike says "Made in America". The current law says the sticker represents where "at least 50% of the assmbly" is done. Just try buying only American made products. No TV, no i-Pod, no computer.........no Walmart!

"The only things still made in America are beer and prostitution." (anonymous quote)
My last civic was made in japan, vin started with a j

I say imports all the way, not only are they more reliable but they also have that sturdy import feeling when your driving them. I had a grand prix, which needed a new tranny a week after I got it with about 50,000 miles on it and I also had an alero with 13,000 miles on it that needed more work than my accord did with 150,000 miles on it, so from my personal experiences....IMPORT!hyundai's dont count, they blow
Your problem consists of the same model vehicle. the alero and grand prix are both W-body vehicles from GM. they used to be great but their quality has slipped quite a bit, plus the 4T60E autos are not the strongest. Try driving the pre 99 GM trucks all the way back to the beginning. They will outlast anything on the road, same as the B-body Impalas, Caprices and BuickRoadmaster. Chevy hasn't quite learned how to do FWD vehicles quite yet, but can't be beat with RWD IMO. I've owned an 86 C1500 Silverado,83 GMC K5 Jimmy, 98 GMC Sierra K1500 and88 Chevrolet Caprice That are all either on the road still or running the 98 and 83 are still in my possesion. the 83 has 210k on the odo and the 98 has 317k and still running. No driveline issues, no major parts replaced and still kicking. I wish my civic holds up the same, i just had to replace alot of the rear suspension recently and redid the whole front over a year ago. I'm very happy with the civic but there is alot to appreciate in quality domestic vehicles. Every car company has less than perfect vehicles or those long in tooth in the design department.

Not that you guys seem to care, but here is a list of the factories and their locations of where the various Hondas cars are manufactured.

This question answers itself.

Foreign car manufactorors such as Toyota, and Honda started marketing in the US a few decades ago. The cars initially didn't sell very well because Americans were understandably weary about cars made out of the US. So the tactic foreign companys came up with is. Flood the market with dirt cheap cars. They sold thousands of cars barley making a profit. The Americans learned that foreign cars were reliable, and started buying them.

Foreign cars go and go and go. I mean. I'd love to see an American car go through this kind of abuse.

Import vs. Demestic isn't as big a deal as it used to be. Most automobile companies have domestic and import technogy going into them with some kind of deal or part ownership, for instance dodge stealth is only 3000gt. There are only a few automobile companies that are sole ownership and partnership with themselves wich Honda being one of the few.

The biggest thing is how the car is being taken car of.

There are still companies that are known to build crappy cars though.

Manufacturing may be a toss-up, but I think the Japanese generally have better engineering. Their cars just "make sense". It's the little things. The power:weight is adequate for what the car is designed to be, not an underpowered dog or an overpowered danger. MPG is better than most. Small parts seem to last better. Controls are easy to reach. Maintenance parts are easy to access.

Comparing something like a Civic to an F150 doesn't make sense either. Compare a Civic to a Cobalt, Neon, or Focus. American econo cars still have a ways to go in the quality and reliability department.

You cant just break it down to is "this car better than that one" because car manufactors exchange parts at a alrming rate now. Like all the high powered 6 speed manual BMW's have GM transmissions, Chevy S-Series pickups are largely Isuzu, so on and so forth.

Kommando:

The Cobalt was designed in Germany and started life as an Opal Astra. It was also an Australian Holden before being built in the states.

The Focus was built for several years in England and Europe before coming to the states.

The Neon is a US car, though most of the engines come from Mexico. The assembly is scheduled to go to Mexico in 2009.

Define what an American car is?

Define what a foreign/import car is?

almost all cars made today are world cars........
