RIP Oscar the Fish
Well, tonight, after a hard week, my Fiancee and I decided to euthenize my Oscar. Now, before you go and judge me, we had to do it because he was suffering from "Hole-in-the-head" Disease, where a small parasite burrows into his head and eats away at his flesh. I spent $50 trying to save him, but it actually got worse at the beginning of the week.. It got to the point where he wouldn't eat and layed at the bottom of the tank and was covered in blisters. It was painful to watch.
Now, mind you this wasn't no "let's just flush him" fish.. he was a 10", 1.2 lb Oscar. After researching the most humane way to euthenize a fish - putting aside the not so humane "hit with club" or "leave out of tank" - the top two were intoxication and thermal shock.. so, why not both I say! They said to make a 1:5 ratio of Vodka and Water and let him swim in that and after a while he should die (most likely because the alcohol affects his gills in a negative fashion), and the thermal shock is that fish, especially oscars, are very sensitive to temperature change. So, by bringing him from his 80 degree water to an almost freezing water with ice, thermal shock should set in. So, after mixing a 1:5 ratio vodka-water and adding about 1/2 lb of ice we put him in the bucket. After 3-5 minutes, thermal shock had set in and he passed away.
Now, because he was not just any fish, a couple of friends, my fiancee, and myself brought him out to the lake and gave him a viking funeral. We put him on a boat made out of a bud light box and newspaper and lit the box and let him float out to sea (lake...). It was a very difficult night for both my fiancee and I as it is hard to lose a pet, even if it was a fish. We were very attached to him.

some people say "it is only a fish" but i say a pet is a pet, like when mark had the pet cricket, now i kill crickets all the time, but it was marks pet(for like 3 days) sorry about your oscar man, they are cool fish and they are huge for a captive fish IMOmaybe it is time for you and your wife to upgrade to something different... say a Bearded Dragon
I had a kitten last fall named Pilgram cause I got it on Thanksgiving.Well my mother went to the kitchen to get something and she steped on it and crushed it to death.I was pissed and she cried for 2 days.It was in feb so I had a chance to get attached to the kitten.I still hold that against her.
