I do a bit of web design, audio work, video production, etc... it's all about having folders for it all and making sure when you're done working you put it all away (or even better, keep it all it it's designated folder). It's not that difficult once you get used to it, but it can be hell cleaning up and organizing all the crap.
The main three things I did to keep my desktop clean were, for one, making a set downloads folder. All downloads I do through firefox all go to this one folder instead of (what people normally do) letting it all download to the desktop. Secondly I have tons of folders, folders for everything, especially projects I do. Every time I think of a new design, audio or graphic project the first thing I do is make a folder for it. Third, if theres anything on the desktop I use a lot I put it in the quick launch section on the start bar instead of having it on my desktop. I also make sure if theres anything on my desktop that I haven't clicked on or used in like, a month or so, I delete it.
That's just me tho, and I like having a fairly clean desktop. The rest of my computer is kind of a mess, but I always try to at least keep that one part clean and neat.
