Default 02 Civic Bad Transmission?

I have a 2002 Civic Coupe LX 1.7 Automatic Transmission with 80,000 miles. Two days ago with no prior problems it just stopped pulling. First it stopped going down the highway then started again. Then I came to a complete stop and nothing no drive no reverse nothing. I live 85 miles form the nearest Honda dealer so I called locally till I found someone that would even look at a Honda Transmission. I don't know this mechanic and never used him before. He suggested a Honda with only 80,000 miles it might just be a bad sensor or solenoid. He suggested we might try replacing those before I'm out $3000 on a new Transmission. Does this sound right or is he trying to stick me with a $1000 repair bill for replacing sensors and solenoids, then opps that didn't work guess you do need a $3000 transmission change. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level? A simple leak can let all the fluid out and then the car will "stop pulling" due to lack of hydraulic pressure to engage the clutches. The problem is if you keep trying to drive like that, the transmission will be seriously damaged.

Yes, I had it towed to my home and when I called the mechanic he had me check it and it was full.

unfortunately the 7th generation civic had faulty auto transmissions especially the 01-03 some didn't even make it past 50,000 miles. the problem was the non servicable internal mesh filter became clogged from the mesh being to fine which dropped pressure and caused the clutch packs to chew themselves to pieces. the 04-05 got an upgraded filter but there were still alot of failures. as far as im concerned there should have been a massive recall. usually the transmission will start slipping especially 2nd-3rd gear then it fails. first get the codes checked then get back to us because i have heard of bad TCC solenoid causing this problem also. of course can test the resistance to see if its functioning.
