1988 Wagovan A/C Compressor Replacement

Hello everyone. I’m new to the forum, but I must say that I’m glad to see that one exists. My question deals with a common subject, the A/C compressor of a 1988 Honda Civic Wagovan.

Wednesday, I had a friend of mine who is in possession of some R-12 recharge my system. Unfortunately, I think we overcharged it because whenever the compressor engages, the car would “thump” and “pull” really hard (you know that decrease in power you feel when the compressor is on). Also, the compressor won’t stay engaged, unless the car is at idle. When I drive, the compressor comes on and off, which I understand is not good. I had some of the R-12 removed in hopes of improvement, but there wasn’t much. After having a reputable, local shop check my system, I was told that the compressor was shot and that I need a new receiver drier and suction hose.

I’ve read that I can replace the compressor myself, convert the system to R-134a, and just go from there. Should I go with a new, used or remanded compressor? Also, should I replace the receiver drier and suction hose? Is this a DIY job? Also, any recommendations on where to get a new compressor at a good price? Thanks for reading.
