1999 Civic - Opening the Hood - Replacing on Dashboard
 

The button/cover (or what ever you call it) to the lever that opens up the hood to my 1999 Civic is broken. Like an idiot, I kept trying to pull open the hood after it was opened. It was dark. Yes, I know, that's a poor excuse.

I've included some images just in case I did a poor job of describing the piece that's broken.

I'm not very mechanical and will need to have someone do this for me. What's the best way to go about getting this fixed without spending an arm and a leg?

I appreciate your help.

go to the salvage/junk yard and get a used one.. tada! :D

That's a rough thing to happen. The only thing you can do is replace the whole cable that goes from the lower dash to the actual latch under the hood. It's mostly easy, just a pain to do. You can get the part from your local dealership, junk yard, or online from here: http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com

That, or carry some pliers with you in the car.

Like the Hobo said, the whole cable has to be replaced. It's not a real expensive part or complicated to do though. If it is still possible to open the hood by grabbing the broken stub with pliers, that makes the job a lot easier.

I tried the pliers idea with several different types of pliers. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any of the pliers to work. The metal part that is left is so small that none of the pliers can "catch" it. Then, behind the metal part is that black, very slippery type of plastic. The pliers will not "catch" on this part, either. The pliers simply slip off.

go to cost less or auto zone or something
its only like $10 and it takes 30 min tops to install
i dont remember if i took the splash guard off or not but its not too complicated
