2001 Civic daytime running lights stopped working

I noticed this morning the daytime running lights weren't working and the DRL light is on. There are 2 fuses under the dash, 7.5A and 10A, I noticed the 10A is blown. I replaced the fuse and it immediately blew. I got out a light tester and with the ignition off it lit up when I went from the fuse socket to ground, so I guess there is obviously some kind of short. Does anyone have some idea as to what to look for now? I saw two relays under the hood, are these also used in the DRL circuit?

Thanks,
Brian

RE: 2001 Civic DRL Light stays on...

I had a problem with my daytime running lights and blower fan staying on with the key out of the ingition. The problem was a faulty relay. Not sure if that is any help to you or not.

What gets me is the headlights work with no problems, both high and low beam. The light does go out when I turn the headlights on. I tried unplugging each headlight to see if the DRL would go out but no change. It's hard to troubleshoot with no diagram, I ordered a Haynes manual today but won't be in for a week. I am wondering if the headlights and daytime running lights operate off the same relays. When I checked the fuse compartment under the hood I saw that each headlight has its ow relay, this has got me thinking, maybe I'll swap them to see if the 7.5A fuse blows rather than the 10A. On that same subject I wonder why there are two different amperages for these fuses?

if its a 10 i dont think you should go lower, that might cause a hazard..always stay at the same, check grounds, sometimes corrotion can get to the wires..this happend to a cavalier that we had in the shop

thats a damn good thing. if i had running lights i would shoot my bulbs when i left in thwe afternoon and then put new ones in at night. althiought it may be a little expensive after a while. and then i would just pull the fuse on it. check the fuse and see if it is that if you want them on. althought on somcars the runners are tied in as well with the bezel fan. sucks huh

The 10A DRL fuse is blowing because of the DRL RELAY located behind the Glove Compartment (LH side, gray fuse marked "MITSUBA RC-5102"). This relay has a built in "Snubber Diode" across the coil which has shorted out, I replaced this doide with a 1N4001. A possible contributing factor to this diode failure are cold solder joints on two relays in the DRL MODULE located behind the dash to the left of the steering column, it is a grey box labeled "MITSUBA RZ-0126". I suspect these bad solder joints opening and closing the circuit erractically caused the DRL Relay Coil to destroy the snubber diode by exceeding its PIV rating, just a hunch.

I had the same problem and it was DRL relay behind the Glove Compartment .

You may have to replace thr DRL relay again if the bad solder joints in the DRL Module have not been repaired....
